The Belfast Giants are a team of ice hockey success that compete in the Elite League ice hockey, which presents the cream of talent ice hockey and box covers UK including Northern Ireland.

The League is working, and is the highest level of hockey in the region, essence, a Premier League with ten teams. The League is sponsored by the supplier of Air Travel bmibaby.

The Belfast Giants have been formed in 2000 and are currently sponsored by Coors beer producers – before they were sponsored by Harp Lager.

It is true that in the past, the ugly face of sectarianism has long cast a shadow over the sport in Belfast, particularly in the football world. For this reason the founders the Belfast Giants have wished that the team was independent of the religious divide, and I wanted to represent the city as a whole, which is a sign course of changing attitudes in the city.

The team play their home games at the impressive ability 7000 Odyssey Arena 2 Queens Quay, Belfast, in the arena spectacular.

The Giants management has adopted a policy of non-sectarianism of these home games – fans are not allowed to wear football shirts or bring their national flags at games. This is to ease tensions might evaporate. This policy was a success and the team is known for his exciting style of play rather than political orientation.

The Giants play in red, black, white shirts and Teal, and wearing black helmets, and 5 have sponsor logos. The team logo features legendary heroes Irish giant Finn McCool (who have resided in the Giant's Causeway) with a hockey stick! The team motto is "In the land of giants, everyone is the same, which summarizes their "non-denominational ethos.

The captain of the current team is George Awada, head coach and current player is Steve Thornton and the CEO is Todd Kelman. The Club is owned and operated by Jim Gillespie & Tom and Donna Mallon.

Some team members were originally from the former Superleague and won the title in 2001-02. However, the league experienced financial difficulties, as the Belfast Giants. The Giants had accumulated considerable debts of over  £ 600,000 and were threatened with closure.

After a plan of salvation by major creditors of the club, the club has survived and competed in the new Elite Ice Hockey League in 2004. It was a poor season for the Giants, however, but this was a period of consolidation. During the 2005 season, the Giants rallied to finish runners up to Coventry Blaze, a pioneer in the league, and they won the League Cup.

In 2005, the Giants were cemented as one of major players in the Elite League with the signing inspired Theoren Fleury, Canadian NHL and Olympic Or winner The Coors Giants (where known) have had several former NHL players like Jason Bowen and Paul Kruse on their books at particular times.

In 2006, the team romped to victory in Elite League, coached by Ed Courtenay, Fleury with the star player, winning a total of 81 points, one of the highest in a season. After finishing runners-up in 2006-07, the Giants had a poor season in 2007-08, which resulted in Courtenay at the outset that his contract ran out.

However, the Giants have a popular fan base, and home games at the Odyssey Arena are often sell outs. You may not be aware that the team to have two fan clubs, testimony to their popularity and talent!

The 2008-09 season

For this season, the club has a new coach, player Steve Thornton, a Canadian who has had a distinguished career in Europe. He replaces former coach Ed Courtenay, who left to the end of last season.

The Giants have won 13 games this season in 16, and are well placed for a winter assault on the title. Last weekend, they beat Sheffield Steelers 3-2 (After Shootout) & Beat Edinburgh Capitals 5-2 to move to 4th position. This Friday, November 28, the Belfast Giants have a game at home against Coventry Blaze and Sunday, they travel to Hull Away stingrays.
