There will come a day or time when you will have to wear a tuxedo, either for a wedding or a special event. If you have never worn a tuxedo you may not know what to look for or how to choose one, these tips will help.

First it’s all about the fit or the way it looks and wears on you, your body type, short tall, heavy or slim.

The Dinner jacket in classic white or ivory with either peaked lapels or shawl collar. This style can be used as a substitute to a full tuxedo. Wear it for the casual wedding or a rehearsal dinner. Looks particularly well with black slacks.

Tails: A jacket that’s short in front with two longer tails hanging in back. Worn mostly with suspenders and a white shirt, vest, this is very formal. Think of the Butler look.

Traditional tuxedo and black tie: Worn at a formal daytime wedding anytime after mid-day. A black or gray jacket with a single button is the mostly worn. The black tie and traditional tux always looks great.

The dark suit: For a dressy but not formal wedding choose charcoal, black, or navy and a solid-color or subtly patterned tie to make the look fit.

Watch your Lapels

Notch lapel: V-shaped cuts pointing inward where the collar and lapel meet the jacket, put a flower.

Peaked lapel: two points of fabric on either side that project upward, with narrow spacing between the lapel and collar.

Shawl collar: A rounded jacket lapel that rolls back into a tapering line. Double-shawl collars roll to reveal satin lining. Looks very classy, you will shine with this look.
