Football Helmet
how to properly wear a football helmet?
I am a single mom whose 7 year old son just started playing football. I know the basic idea of how to play but I would like some more info so that I may be able to help him out. He can’t see when he wears his helmet – it doesn’t fit snugly but that’s the helmet that his coach gave him to wear. It’s difficult to put on and take off and even harder to see cause it covers his eyes. He says it is too heavy and his head just falls back from weight of it.
Obviously it makes no sense to wear a helmet that you cannot see out of.
It will be tight…especially at the ears and/or cheek bones depending on the type of helmet. Schutt Youth helmets have additional cheek bone protection that I personally find annoying.
With the helmet on and the chin strap snapped up:
It should feel tight – but not crushing tight.
The ear holes should be at the center of his ear.
When he turns his head the helmet should move with him…
…in otherwords…his face shouldn’t turn inside the helmet.
When you take hold of the face mask and try to turn the helmet left and right / up and down, the helmet should not shift … it should move his head.
he’s 7…the helmet will be heavy…but it shouldn’t be so heavy that he can’t keep his head up.
If the coach cannot find a suitable helmet; he’s
going to have to order one. It’s irresponsible to think his players should play like that.

Our Youth team has these problems; but we have an equipment salesman from the Sporting goods shop that sizes our players up and makes those orders.
